YOSHIKI Performs Both National Anthems at MLB Opening Game

A Packed Tokyo Dome Erupts in Applause for the Historic Performance

Hailed as “The Most Beautiful Rendition of the National Anthem Ever”

On Tuesday, March 18th, at the MLB opening game between the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers held at Tokyo Dome, YOSHIKI performed the anthems of both countries, captivating a packed Tokyo Dome.

YOSHIKI, who underwent his third neck surgery in October last year and has been undergoing long-term treatment, pubicly performed for the first time.

YOSHIKI’s signature crystal piano was set on a special stage as announcements echoed through the venue:
“At this time, we ask that you please rise if you are able and kindly remove your caps. Here to perform the national anthem of the United States, followed by the national anthem of Japan, please welcome the artist who bridges both nations through his music—YOSHIKI.”

With that announcement, YOSHIKI took the stage, seating himself quietly at the piano, instantly transforming the atmosphere of the venue. As his performance began, the flags of Japan and the United States were displayed on the field and projected onto the giant screen.

As the melodies of both national anthems—specially arranged by YOSHIKI—resonated through the stadium, a solemn stillness enveloped the crowd, captivating the audience. With the final note, Tokyo Dome erupted in thunderous applause and cheers, as athletes smiled in appreciation. This powerful moment, where music and sports converged, became a historic and symbolic scene.

Following the performance, YOSHIKI shared his thoughts:“I’ve performed dozens of concerts at Tokyo Dome, but this was my first time playing the piano to open a baseball game. My hands were numb, and I couldn’t move them as I wanted, which is a shame—but if I was able to add some class to the event, I’m happy. I was still in rehabilitation from my neck surgery, as it hadn’t been long enough, but with everyone watching over me, I managed to get through it. Now, I’m looking forward to watching the Cubs vs. Dodgers game and enjoying the world’s best Major League Baseball, including the incredible Japanese players excelling in the U.S.”

YOSHIKI has played a significant role in global ceremonies and historic events.

In 1999, he composed “Anniversary” to commemorate the 10th anniversary of His Majesty the Emperor’s accession to the throne and was honored with the opportunity to perform it at the national ceremony in front of the Imperial Palace.

In 2012, he was selected to compose the official theme song for the Golden Globe Awards, further solidifying his influence on the international stage.

In September 2023, YOSHIKI became the first Japanese artist in the 100-year history of TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles to have his handprints and footprints enshrined at the iconic Hollywood landmark.

Additionally, as a Los Angeles resident, YOSHIKI was introduced at Dodger Stadium in April 2024 as “the most influential musician in Japanese history.” His unparalleled musical expression and global recognition led to his significant role in the MLB Japan Opening Game, marking yet another milestone in his extraordinary career.
